Hello, everyone! This is travel blogger Jones Go. Today, I will vividly share my experience of visiting a Vietnamese market. In this article, I will tell you about a Vietnamese market that you have never experienced before. Please read until the end!
Trying a different snail dish
In particular, steamed snails gave me an unforgettable first experience. The chewy texture and unique flavor were impressive. At first, it was unfamiliar, but I mustered up the courage to try it with a spirit of challenge for local food. It was more delicious than I thought! Here, they boil raw radish and put it on top of the radish, and they serve both large and small snails. The basic base seasoning is ginger-based. It tastes a little spicy from the ginger and the soy sauce-based soup is salty. It feels like taking medicine. However, it refreshes your body. And be sure to try the dipping sauce. It is slightly addictive. The price of snails is 30,000 dong, which is about 1 dollar.
It was also fun to look around the market and see the various products. From fresh vegetables to souvenirs, there was nothing that wasn't there. In particular, the sight of vendors selling live chickens and ducks gave me a taste of the old market. I saw live ducks and duck eggs in the market when I was young in Korea, but now it is almost impossible to find them.
Visiting a Market
During my trip to Vietnam, I wanted to experience the local life more deeply, so I visited a market. The market is located at Bac My An Market in Da Nang. In the local language, it is called Chợ Bắc Mỹ An. If you travel to Vietnam, you will occasionally see the letters Chợ. Then, you have arrived at the market. It is usually written in large letters at the entrance, so if you know this letter, it will definitely be helpful.
When I first visited this market, the market scenery was truly spectacular. The lively people and various products created an exotic atmosphere. And most of all, I was surprised that the prices at this market were the same even though many foreigners visited, even though the prices were for locals. Usually, due to gentrification, the rent goes up and the price of goods goes up as well, but I felt that this is not the case here. It is a market that many people visit.
Trying avocado ice cream, a specialty product
The avocado ice cream I found to rest my body tired from the heat was fantastic. The combination of soft avocado and chewy gelato was so good. Locals who come to this market especially come here to eat this ice cream. I uploaded information about this ice cream shop on my YouTube channel, Jonesgo, so please refer to it. The ice cream here is chewy like gelato. I think I have visited this place more than 10 times.
Sometimes the ice cream was so delicious that I ate only the ice cream without the avocado. However, when I ate only the ice cream, it was too sweet for me to finish it. I also bought and ate ice cream with durian, avocado, and ice cream together, and this was fantastic for me who loves durian. There are many menus, so feel free to order. But keep in mind that this place is famous for its avocado ice cream. It costs 20,000 dong. It’s less than $1. I want to try the ice cream in a glass bottle again.
Visiting a really delicious bakery
Lastly, I spent some leisurely time with delicious bread. The bread, bagel, and Nunetti’s style bread with berry jam were sweet and savory. This is a bread that you can only find here. It’s a bagel, but it’s not the bagel with a hole in the middle that we know, but a bagel with a hollow center. It costs less than $1, but it’s really delicious. It’s chewy even after a long time, and it’s a little salty, so you can enjoy it before a meal or as a meal replacement.
I like bagels, but Nunetti’s bread with berry jam is even more impressive. They make jam with real berries here, so when you take a bite, you’ll be surprised to find that there are so many seeds. This place is like heaven to me, a berry lover. If I tell you about this place, it will be sad because there will be a lot of people, but if you are a bread lover, I am happy to share my experience with you.
The Vietnamese market is not just a place to buy and sell food, but a place where you can vividly experience the life and culture of the local people. In the next episode, I will tour the market to find fresh clams and show you how to cook clam dishes. And I will show you how to choose delicious watermelon and peaches and cook them at home.
